Podomatic is a useful tool for creating and publishing video podcasts. It's a free service with an option to purchase a pro account for more upload storage which might be necessary if you are planning to publish a number of video episodes.
I found Podomatic to be very easy to use. I was able to create and publish a short video podcast in a matter of minutes and there it was, out there for anyone to watch (Yikes! At least it was footage of my dog and not myself.)
One obvious application of this technology in education would be for instructors to create and publish video podcasts as course material, either as the primary instructional presentation, or as a review or suplimentary resource. Students could subscribe and watch episodes on their computer or MP3 player.
Students could also create and publish video podcasts. One example would be to assign a demonstration presentation over a number of episodes. Students would be able to capture footage of themselves performing a task on location and explaining how it is done. Another possible assignment would be to have the students give a walking tour of a neighborhood or an area of their city. This might be a good way to build community in an online class with students from various locations.
